Meals Provided: Breakfast and lunch

This morning you'll be driven to the Patara Elephant Camp for a unique and hands-on experience (join-in, group tour). Thailand is truly "the land of the elephant" with nearly 5,000 wild and domesticated elephants throughout the country. Your experience at Patara will be much more than the typical and touristy elephant ride that most visitors to Thailand experience.

Please bring a towel, swim suit, change of clothes, sunscreen, hat and mosquito repellant with you.

Once at the camp, you will be briefed on the history of the domestic elephant in Thailand and during the course of the day, you will learn about elephant farm management and elephant breeding programs.

After your briefing, you'll spend the morning acquainting yourself with your elephant (each participant has their own elephant). Learn how to approach and be near elephants and observe their temperament. Spend some time feeding and taking care of your elephant. You'll then unleash and walk your elephant to the river for a bath. Learn the different techniques for getting on your elephant, as well as basic riding skills and spoken commands for elephants.

Late in the morning, you'll have the option to take part in a bareback riding session. Enjoy a short ride, or walk if you prefer, to a local temple where you'll learn about the role elephants play in Buddhism and how Thai people relate to them.

In the early afternoon, proceed to a local waterfall for a picnic lunch and then you'll have the opportunity to help bath and clean your elephant in the river. You then return to the camp for the elephants' afternoon feeding. It is then time to say goodbye. Your driver will be waiting to take you back to the hotel where you'll have the evening on your own.

  • Overnight at the Rachamankha (Deluxe Room) - Chiang Mai

Meals Provided: Breakfast and lunch

Today you'll enjoy a full day excursions into the mountains and hills north of Chiang Mai to explore and visit some of the ethnic minority peoples that inhabit the region and hold distinctly different identities, customs and religion to Thais. Many of these groups have Sino-Tibetan origins but have settled in Thailand where they are free from persecution.

Following breakfast meet your English-speaking guide and begin your day with the one-hour drive toward Chiang Dao, where you will take a leisurely bamboo raft trip down the Ping River. While the helmsman maneuvers your raft downstream, you'll have time to look around and enjoy the scenery, the sun and the sounds of the birds.

Continue to Chiang Dao Cave. This well-known cave complex is about 6.2 miles long. The cave where some Buddha images are enshrined is illuminated by electric lights. The deep recesses, which have no light fixtures, can be explored with local guides and lanterns.

Next, you'll visit the Karen hill tribe village at Baan Pha Lai. The majority of the Karen people live in Myanmar (Burma), yet they are by far the most numerous of the major tribes in Northern Thailand. From the village, set out on an easy hike of about 20 minutes to a Lisu hill tribe village. This colorful ethnic group is found in the mountains of China, Myanmar and Northern Thailand, though their origins are in eastern Tibet. Their houses are built on the ground, with dirt floors and bamboo walls around a central ridge. For many generations the economic livelihood of the Lisu people has been based upon the cultivation of the opium poppy. Some of these people have given up this trade and are now seeking to supplement their income through the sale of skillfully produced crafts.

You'll then hike about ten minutes to an Akha hill tribe village. Every Akha village is distinguished by their carved wooden gates, presided over by guardian spirits. They live in raised houses on low stilts, with a large porch leading into a square living area with a stove at the back. The roof is steeply pitched. They live on marginal land and find it difficult to eke out a living through their slash-and-burn method of agriculture.

End the afternoon with a one hour ride through the jungle to the Paling Hill tribe village. A short stop at a orchid nursery before arriving back at your hotel

Phang Nga Bay's spectacular limestone scenery has captured the hearts of movie makers, writers and romantics for decades. Scores of beautiful islands rise up from the Andaman Sea, their tree-clad cliffs casting a rainbow of contrast to the bay's sparkling Perrier-bottle hue.

There is no finer way to experience this remarkable scene than from the deck of the June Bathra, a traditional junk- rigged schooner that you will take for a sail today on a join-in cruise. Recline on comfortable cushions below the boat's striking red sails as the views of the archipelago from Phuket to Phang Nga unfold before you.

As the boat glides gracefully across the water, a spectacle of islands towering above the sea offers a striking display of green and mottled limestone color. Later, you'll stop at a deserted white sand beach for a secluded swim in the refreshing clear waters.

  • You'll take a ride on a long tail boat to visit caves and mangroves, the entire area alive with birdsong and monkey chatter. At James Bond Island, enjoy views of the iconic rock formation rising out of the bay.

Back onboard, enjoy a delicious buffet lunch, including freshly caught fish and seafood. After a secluded swim and perhaps snorkel, just sit back and savor this coastal scenery a bit longer - and the romance of the open sea on board this unique sailing vessel. Return to your hotel later this afternoon.
